Turner Construction Company’s North Alabama office completed construction of the $46 million Toyota Field in Madison, Alabama. The multi-use facility will be the home field of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, a Double-A Minor League Baseball team in the Southern League expected to begin playing in the new stadium later this year.

THE PROJECT

Construction began in July 2018 on the 160,000-square-foot stadium, located within the Town Madison development off of I-565, next to the new Zierdt Road Interchange. Turner served as construction manager agent for the City of Madison, partnering with general contractor Hoar Construction to complete the stadium on time and under budget. Also collaborating on the project were architectural design firm Populous and engineers Mullins, LLC (civil engineer), Thornton Tomasetti (structural engineer), and Henderson Engineers (MEP, fire protection, and audio visual engineer).

Though Turner’s work is now complete, a separate developer-led project for Town Madison on the main parking lot to the west of the stadium is ongoing.

“Being able to make a positive impact on a community like Madison is one of the most rewarding parts of the work we do,” says Tyce Hudson, manager of business development at Turner Construction Company. “We’re proud of our work on this stadium, which will be the site of many entertaining nights of sports, as well as happy memories for fans in the years to come.”

MULTI-USE FACILITY

The stadium has a capacity of roughly 7,000 people and will host soccer, football, concerts, and other events in addition to Minor League Baseball. In addition, the club level and suite spaces will be used for meetings for companies and private groups, with a capacity of up to 400 people.

The venue offers a variety of seating options, including group celebration decks, corporate suites, a party bar located on a rock outcrop in the outfield, and a grass-covered knoll area, as well as general admission seating. Families will enjoy picnic tables for birthday parties located next to a large playground. The stadium has been built with accessibility in mind, with ramps used whenever possible.

“We’re thrilled to have this venue complete and we’re eagerly awaiting the return of Double-A Minor League Baseball to the Tennessee Valley,” says Mayor Paul Finley. “We’ve now worked with Turner successfully on two major projects, our venue and Madison Library, that have come in on time and on budget. We’re very pleased with the final product and are excited to have this much-needed new stadium in our community.”

TURNER EXPERIENCE

Turner has extensive experience building national sports complexes, previously performing work on more than 450 sports facilities. Among them are professional, collegiate and community ballparks, stadiums, arenas, training facilities and fitness centers, speedways, racetracks, and large high school facilities. Its clients include teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and MLS.

“Turner has been an excellent partner to BallCorps, the City of Madison, Hoar Construction, and our lead designer, Populous, throughout the construction process,” says Ralph Nelson, managing partner and CEO of BallCorps, LLC, owner of the Rocket City Trash Pandas. “We appreciate their focus on staying within the project budget while bringing the high level of quality to this project that fans deserve. We’re excited to already be moved into the stadium administrative offices, and we can’t wait until the first pitch this spring!”
