Houston, Texas, is the home of the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). A recent completion of the campus overhaul consists of two new buildings, a new conservation center, and a landscape plan that ties together 100 years of signature architectural structures. Also included in the transformation of the campus was the construction of a new building for the Glassell School, designed to house students of both the Studio School and Junior School, and residents in the Core program. This is the first time all of the art students are housed under one roof.

In May 2018, the Glassell School of Art opened.

YARDS OF CONCRETE

CEMEX supplied more than 21,000 cubic yards of custom-made concrete for the Glassell School of Art. Designed by Steven Holl Architects, the new Glassell School of Art extends more than 93,000 square feet and features an L-shaped design with various angles, depths, and exposed beams and surfaces that required several specialty concrete mixes.

The MFA website (www.mfah.org) describes the Glassell School of art as “constructed from a series of sandblasted, pre-cast concrete panels, alternating with panes of glass, in a rhythm of verticals and slight angles.”

VERSATILITY OF CONCRETE

Over the span of 2.5 years, CEMEX provided different tailor-made concrete mixes for this project, each requiring a different pour. Additionally, CEMEX supplied hand-mixed batches of white concrete, with every pour closely controlled by an on-site quality specialist.

“This project really showcases what concrete can do both structurally and architecturally,” says Alexis Evans, market development manager of CEMEX USA’s Texas Region. “The service schedule was demanding and challenging, so it was very important for us to deliver exactly what the customer wanted, precisely when they needed it.”
