A conversation with Matthew Elvin, CEO, Xtreme Manufacturing and Snorkel
Xtreme Manufacturing is a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty telehandlers, and more. In a recent conversation, Xtreme Manufacturing and Snorkel CEO, Matthew Elvin, shares how the company’s telehandlers will complement the anticipated growth in the construction industry.
How’s business for Xtreme Manufacturing?
ELVIN: We have had a very strong start to 2017. We are known for producing one of the largest lines of high capacity telehandlers in North America, and we have seen particularly high levels of demand for models with lift capacities ranging from 20,000 lbs. to 70,000 lbs. so far this year.
What has influenced your company and its equipment/service lines?
ELVIN: Xtreme is part of a larger family of complementary businesses with global operations within the equipment manufacturing, rental, and service sectors. This puts us in a unique position where we are able to harness first-hand customer feedback at all levels of the equipment ownership or rental cycle. This level of customer knowledge allows us to develop products that minimize downtime, boost productivity, and maximize equipment life.
The business was founded and continues to be led by Don Ahern, who, through his background in equipment rental, saw the opportunity for high capacity telehandlers. A true visionary, Don pushed the boundaries of equipment design, with Xtreme leading the market with the introduction of heavy-duty telehandlers with lifting capacities ranging from 20,000 lbs. to 70,000 lbs. Today, Xtreme produces North America’s largest capacity telehandler, the 70,000 lbs. XR7038, that is becoming popular in infrastructure and mining applications, where it delivers significant productivity benefits over mobile cranes.

What sets Xtreme Manufacturing apart from others in the industry?
ELVIN: Xtreme Manufacturing is a privately owned business with our products designed, fabricated, and assembled in the USA. We focus on producing high-quality, well-designed products that promote jobsite safety and deliver customer satisfaction that leads to long-term customer relationships built on trust. We are able to quickly adapt to changes in the market.
Xtreme telehandlers are high specification lifts that have set a new standard in the industry. Back in 1999, as an equipment rental operator, Don Ahern was dissatisfied with the telehandlers available in the market. He decided to create his own telehandler range that instantly delivered better performance. Using high-quality components and engineering many superior product features, Don was able to produce a high-quality telehandler with a long working life, ultimately reducing the total cost of ownership when compared with other manufacturers’ products. These features include 360-degree operator visibility from the cab, an integrated boom lift point for safer handling of suspended loads, and intuitive one-handed controls, allowing the operator to keep one hand on the steering wheel at all times.
What is your forward outlook for the construction industry? For Xtreme Manufacturing?
ELVIN: The construction forecast, as well as the political and economic indicators for the year, is providing a positive outlook in most market segments. Increased investment in infrastructure, wind energy generation, and commercial building, proposed by the current administration, presents significant opportunities for Xtreme Manufacturing. All interactions with both customers and vendors are indicating positivity and high level of confidence in the industry. This translates into an optimistic outlook for Xtreme, as the use of telehandlers is necessary for both private and public sector projects. We see our telehandlers complementing all aspects of growth forecasted for the industry. ■
Xtreme will be launching a 10,000 lbs. capcity telehandler
at ConExpo 2017.
