In the world of low cab forward (LCF) trucks, it’s hard to argue with the success of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc.—Isuzu trucks have been the best-selling LCF trucks in the U.S. since 1986. In a recent conversation, executive director of marketing at Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., Brian Tabel shares how the Isuzu truck line has evolved to meet the needs of today’s contractors.
How’s business for Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc.?
TABEL: Our business has been strong and Isuzu truck sales are up as the economy and the building industry continue to recover. In fact, we just recently delivered the 500,000th Isuzu-built truck since the Isuzu brand entered the North American market in 1984.
What has influenced Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc. and its product offerings?
TABEL: We pay close attention to what our customers need in a truck, then build the models that work best for them. That’s why we offer our N-Series trucks with two diesel engines and a gasoline engine that can also be converted to CNG or LPG—engine choices that provide the most efficient operation for owners’ specific applications. Isuzu offers a wide selection of Class 3 through Class 5 trucks in a wide range of GVWRs and two cab configurations: standard cab and crew cab.
How does Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc. add benefit for the contractor?
TABEL: For one, all of our trucks have a low cost of ownership, and they deliver good fuel economy. In addition, we have initiated our “24/60K” program—it covers all scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, on all Isuzu N-Series diesel trucks. This is just another example of Isuzu’s commitment to driving down the cost of operation for our owners.

Based on your experience, what is one facet of business that can make a positive difference in a contractor’s operations?
TABEL: Isuzu provides something unique with our diesel models—a Vehicle Health Report. When truck owners bring their Isuzu in for routine service every 10,000 miles, the dealer generates a report that documents how the truck has been driven. It monitors acceleration, braking, idle time, fuel economy, and more, giving the owner an accurate snapshot of how it’s operating.
In your opinion, what are the top 3 pressing issues for the construction industry?
TABEL: First, I would say that today’s contractors have to learn how to operate lean and mean if they want to succeed for the long run. Second, new housing starts need to improve. And third, the pressure is on everyone—contractors and truck companies, like ours—to be “green” and be more eco-friendly.
What is your forward outlook for the construction industry? For Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc.?
TABEL: It appears the economy will continue to recover, and along with that, hopefully, new home construction picks up, putting more people back to work. At Isuzu, we’re positioned to provide the trucks today and for tomorrow’s contractors while offering the lowest cost of ownership.
Closing thoughts?
TABEL: Having worked with Isuzu for two decades, I have watched the construction industry go through various cycles. I am proud to say that over the years, many contractors have put their trust in Isuzu trucks. We will continue to provide leading products and support for the contractor vocations. ■
